Today's employers require a higher level of literacy and workplace skills than those needed by previous generations. Fewer jobs are available for unskilled workers and individuals without a high school diploma or GED. The YWCA Adult Literacy Center provides programs with the resources and support that lead to positive outcomes for individuals and families. Outcomes include increasing literacy levels and workplace skills, transitioning to post-secondary education, job training or employment.
Our adult literacy program provides reading, writing, math, English language, GED test preparation, and U.S. citizenship test preparation. The programs are available in the tri-county area.
Our six week Job Skills Program is designed to assist low skilled and entry-level workers obtain basic job skills. The model focuses on imparting basic workplace literacy skills such as job readiness, communication, interaction & relationship building and basic computer literacy to participants. Last year 52% of the participants in our job skills classes found employment, mostly in entry-level service positions in places such as fast food franchises, grocery stores and retail and outlet stores.
